The new year gives us a feeling of a new start. Time to evaluate our goals for career, family, as well as financially. The last one is trickiest of all!

The most difficult task of building is a secure financial future rests with our own resolve. Take the time to reset your shoulders and jaw, and start saving.

All manners of saving! Both “Qualified” (403b’s, 401k’s, IRA’s, Roth’s, SEP’s), and “Non-qualified” (Savings accounts, equities, life insurance, and even piggy banks!)

If you are in your “accumulation phase” of life, use all the tax shelters you can which are made disposable to you by the IRS. Let your tax dollars go to your needs, not the Federal Govt.

If you are in the “distribution phase” of your career, nearing retirement, then look at TRS Partial Lump Sum Options transfers to move money from the state into your own family controlled accounts. Look into transferring 403b’s and 401k’s into individual retirement vehicles, that pay a bonus, and help jump start your funds in Lifetime Income Benefit programs. These are funds “you cannot outlive!”

ATTENTION

2015 Income Taxes will be due April, 15, 2015.

You can fund your IRA before this date, to reflect on your 2015 tax deductions.

MAXIMUMS FOR 2016

  • 401k/403b/457 contribution limit: Will stay the same at $18,000 in 2016. If you are age 50 or over, the catch-up contribution limit will also stay the same at $6,000.
  • Traditional and Roth IRA contribution limit: Will stay the same at $5,500 in 2016. The age 50 catch up limit is fixed by law at $1,000.
